Happy Christmas to all our friends

The card above is believed to be one of the first mass-produced Christmas cards - dating back more than 160 years - and can be found among the extensive special collections of Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology.
The lithographed card caused a controversy in some quarters of Victorian English society when it was published in 1843 because it prominently features a child taking a sip from a glass of wine. Approximately 1,000 copies of the card were printed but only 10 have survived to modern times. Bridwell Library acquired its copy in 1982. The card was designed for Henry Cole by his friend, the English painter John Calcott Horsley (1808-1882). Cole wanted a ready-to-mail greeting card because he was too busy to engage in the normal custom of writing notes with Christmas and New Year's greetings to friends and family.
The card pre-dated color printing so it was hand-colored. The card is divided into three panels with the center panel depicting a family drinking wine at a celebration and the flanking panels illustrating charitable acts of feeding and clothing the poor.
Cole, who also wrote and published Christmas books, printed more cards than he needed so he sold the extra cards for one shilling each.
Widespread commercial printing of Christmas cards began in the 1860s, when a new process of color printing lowered the manufacturing cost and the price. Consequently, the custom of sending printed Christmas greetings spread throughout England.
Now we can just stick them on the internet… have a good Christmas and best wishes for the New Year from everyone at Ferno.
Ferno will be closed from December 24  and will reopen on January 2.
In exceptional circumstances of needing any assistance from Ferno during the above period, please call Lee on 07730 913040.

Well done Victoria!

It’s always nice to be appreciated! Particularly, when that appreciation is coming from Leicestershire Search & Rescue who we work closely with. I received this email above from their Vice Chairman Andy Spry in which he praised Ferno and gave special thanks to our star colleague Victoria Woodford.
We all know that Victoria is a grafter and dedicated to looking after our customers but it’s still nice when a customer expresses it in such kind terms.

Planning for disaster: Do you have an emergency evacuation plan?

If you needed to evacuate your building in an emergency how confident are you that you would be able to get every single person out quickly and safely?
The recent report into the Hillsborough disaster has illustrated in stark and disturbing detail just how important it is that large venues such as sports grounds and entertainment arenas have effective evacuation procedures in place.
Following changes in legislation such as the Equality Act 2010 and the Fire Safety Regulatory Reform Order 2005, venues which are open to the public, no matter how big or small, are legally obliged to ensure that all members of the public, particularly those with disabilities or mobility issues, have equal access to facilities and can safely escape a property in the event of incident.
Property managers also have to take responsibility for the evacuation of everyone on their site, whether they be employees, visitors or members of the public and whether it is just one individual who has suffered an injury or a crowd of thousands.
Simon Shepherd, our commercial director, says: “The key to making sure everyone is evacuated safely in an emergency situation is to be prepared and know exactly what needs to be done and who needs do it. It is essential that every member of staff knows how to act, where to direct people, and what equipment is available to get everyone off the premises safely.”
We provide a range of consultancy services to ensure that property owners meet all statutory safety standards and provides a range of training services and evacuation audits to a wide range of customers including football clubs, arenas, property owners and facility managers.
Human behavior in emergency situations differs and studies have shown that about two thirds of the time available to escape is taken up by a person’s initial reaction. Often there is a delay while people decide if the alarm is real and only act after seeing the reaction of others around them to the developing situation. It is therefore crucial that an effective emergency plan is put in place for those who may need extra help to escape.
Ensuring that you have the correct evacuation procedures in place and are complying with the relevant health and safety legislation can be a minefield which is why several sports clubs across the UK have used Ferno to assess their risks and evacuation plan in the case of an emergency.
Ferno’s Evacuation Audit is a new form of risk assessment which considers all aspects of an emergency evacuation including the management of disabled people, treating the injured, the effects of smoke, lighting and crowd control.
Simon says: “Our Evacuation Audit is suitable for all public buildings and venues where members of the public congregate. This can be anything from museums and art galleries to massive sports stadiums and concert venues. It is also suitable for workplaces of all sizes, whether they employ four people of 400.
“In truth any building whether it is a major arena or bank offices will benefit from an evacuation audit. Even those who think they have all the correct procedures in place may be surprised by what else they can do to aid a safe and speedy evacuation should an emergency situation arise.
“We recently carried out an evacuation audit at Huddersfield Town’s John Smith’s Stadium where we assessed all areas of the football ground and were able to suggest what measures needed to be put in place and what equipment they needed to make an evacuation of all visitors as easy as possible.
“As we all now know from the Hillsborough disaster, there were lots of things that went wrong on that day and football stadiums have changed a lot since then, but having a good evacuation procedure in place could really help to prevent such tragic loss of life should an emergency situation ever arise.”
Football and sports clubs which have used Ferno’s emergency medical and evacuation equipment and its consultancy and training services includes Huddersfield Town, Derby County, Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and the Leicester Tigers. Meanwhile, Ferno equipment was also in place at several locations throughout the Olympic and Paralympics.
Ferno’s evacuation equipment includes several different evacuation chairs which can be manufactured to suit any stairwell in any building such as the EZ Glide® Evacuation Stair Chair which glides patient loads up to 227kg down stairs without carrying or lifting and the Compact 4 Track which glides down stairs with ease.
All chairs can be folded and wall mounted for easy storage and quickly deployed in an emergency. Ferno’s evacuation equipment also includes basic trauma equipment for anyone who is injured and can’t be taken by chair ranging from carry sheets and stretchers to burns treatment and emergency foil blankets.
And to make sure that customers can get the best out of their equipment, Ferno has also launched a new training service.
Ferno managing director Jon Ellis says:  “The training service ensures that anyone using Ferno’s products will have the right skills set to use them safely and efficiently. Training is also available to any organisations, which under law are obliged to have a range of rescue and evacuation products on their premises.
“We recently carried out a training session for the National Gallery of Scotland when it took delivery of a Ferno EZ Glide. This is the first chair of its kind in the industry. It has multiple uses as a stair chair, evacuation chair or transport chair and is suitable for many different environments.
“Our work with the National Gallery is a perfect example of what we can offer to our customers in terms of service delivery – not only a great product but also high quality support training to ensure they get the very best out of their investment. A particular area of expertise is our ability to ‘customise’ and ‘tailor’ courses and programmes to suit a wide range of customer and clients’ needs, which is what we did with the National Gallery.”
“The EZ Glide chair will be extremely useful” said Michael Clarke, Director of the Scottish National Gallery. “The practicality and ease of use of the chair will help the Gallery aid disabled visitors as well as ensuring the safety of all visitors in the event of an accident or emergency.
“We found the training programme to be invaluable. It gave us the opportunity to learn about the full potential of the chair and all its uses, meaning that we are likely to use it far more than we would have done.”
Ferno’s Evacuation Audit is suitable for all leisure venues including sports stadiums, music venues, theatres and cinemas as well as hotels, schools, universities and workplaces, large and small. As Ferno work closely with the emergency services all staff are experts in all aspects of emergency evacuation planning.

Ferno managing director Jon Ellis says: “Ambulance trolleys need to be manoeuverable and quickly secured within a vehicle – these considerations are an absolute must.
“But to perform the task to maximum efficiency you also need a trolley which can lift and carry heavier patients without risk of injury to the operator and without needing frequent battery charges.”
The ACETECH system is the first of its kind for UK emergency medical vehicles and provides system wide, on-board intelligence to improve ambulance vehicle efficiency and safety, while reducing an ambulance service’s operating and fuel costs.
Meanwhile, Ferno will show a range of products, particularly suited for search and rescue operations in difficult environments, including its vast range of basket stretchers and the Paraguard Excel – a compact and versatile stretcher used to rescue casualties from buildings, industrial incidents or confined spaces. Come and see us at the Funeral Directors' Conference

We are launching our Coffin Buggy - a new lightweight body lifting solution – at the British Institute of Funeral Directors Conference in Harrogate tomorrow.
The Coffin Buggy has been developed for funeral directors and morticians who have long demanded a more compact and diverse answer to solve common issues associated with other lifting equipment.
The coffin buggy features a ribbed rubber top to protect the coffin and prevent slippage, and swivel castors with double wheels for extra load bearing and to enable the buggy to run on all floor surfaces.
The Coffin Buggy, which weighs just 3.5kgs and can bear loads of up to 200kgs, will be on show on October 26-27 at the BIFD Conference at the Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate alongside Ferno’s extensive range of funeral and mortuary equipment including the Ferno X Lifter.
The X Lifter makes it possible for anyone to single handedly easily load and unload a coffin rack. It is also super lightweight. It is 5kgs lighter than any similar item and the most compact lifter ever produced at 318mm when closed-down for easy storage when not in use.
Ferno Managing Director Jon Ellis said: “The response we have received from customers operating in the funeral and mortuary sector to equipment like the X Lifter, Flexible Body Fridge and the Coffin Buggy has been very encouraging.
“It underscores our deep understanding of the work funeral and mortuary technicians do and demonstrates how Ferno develops products to meet their needs.”

Ferno at the World Rescue Challenge 2012

Yesterday London Fire Brigade hosted the biggest fire and rescue service challenge in the world at ExCeL, Docklands. Firefighters from across the globe competed to be the best in emergency rescue skills.
The World Rescue Challenge 2012, which began yesterday and runs until Saturday, was attended by Ferno’s Business Development Manager for the south, Lee Searle. Thanks for the picture Lee!
As you can see, lots of Ferno kit was used by the rescue services during the Extrication Challenge - one of the most exciting events at the WRC. Each challenge lasts for 20 minutes and involves two cars and real ‘casualties’ (actors wearing body makeup to look like they’ve been injured in an accident). The sparks really fly when the teams use specialist cutting gear to see who can rescue the casualty in the safest and speediest way.
Teams attending the event came from as far away as Australia, Germany, Ghana, New Zealand, Russia and South Africa. The UK was well represented with ten fire services attending including Avon, Central Scotland, Humberside, London and North Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance move to Nostell

Good luck to our friends at the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who have found a new home at the Nostell Estate near Wakefield.
They are abandoning the base they have had at Leeds-Bradford Airport since its inception because of growing demands on airspace. The charity said take-offs and landings at the Yeadon airport were being delayed by increasing air traffic.
The charity said: “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance will continue to provide a state-of-the-art rapid response helicopter emergency medical service across the region every day of every year.”
It follows a planning application to Wakefield Council to convert the vacant Nostell Priory Roses Building at the site, off Doncaster Road.
Under the plans, an empty warehouse will be turned into a hangar to keep the helicopter overnight, and a landing pad, fuel area and office space will be created, with a canteen and rest areas for up to five crew members.
A second base at RAF Topcliffe, near Thirsk, will be maintained.
Yorkshire Air Ambulance added: “The charity had been looking to further enhance the service it currently provides across the region, and the Nostell Priory Roses Building was identified as a potential new location for the airbase.
“The helicopter will be relocated from its existing base at Leeds-Bradford International Airport while the second air ambulance continues to operate from its base at RAF Topcliffe in North Yorkshire.
“The charity will operate from the new base at Nostell in daylight hours only, as specified by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) guidelines, and hopes to be operational by summer 2013.”
Good luck with your new home.

We will be showcasing our new EZ Glide® PowerTraxx™ and its Harrier LT and LT-LBS ambulance trolleys as well as our wide range of evacuation equipment.
The EZ Glide chair had been designed to meet the demanding needs of medical and disaster response services. “The EZ Glide is the first chair of its kind in the industry,” said Jon Ellis, Managing Director at Ferno. “It has multiple uses as a stair chair, evacuation chair or transport chair - capable of maneuvering over kerbs and rough terrain. It comes with powered tracks that deploy easily to eliminate the need for lifting or carrying while ascending or descending stairs, reducing the risk of injury to medical staff.”

The Harrier LT is configurable to different customer needs and requirements and includes an LBS version for carrying larger patients. There are several options and accessories designed to improve its ease of use and reduce manual handling injuries including a directional wheel lock, a removable headrest pad and a wired remote control keypad.
The smooth powered lifting action with slow start-stop movements guarantees complete patient comfort while also ensuring operator safety and reflective strips on the top, base and x-frame rails ensures increased visibility at night.
Ambulance trolleys need to be easily maneuverable and quickly secured within the vehicle – these considerations are an absolute must. But to perform the task to maximum efficiency you also need a trolley which can lift and carry heavier patients without risk of injury to the operator and without needing frequent battery charges.
The Ferno Harrier LT and Harrier LT LBS fulfill these criteria and with all the different options and accessories available it is one of our most adaptable ambulance trolleys yet.
Ferno will be exhibiting on stands 556 and 156 Emergency Services Show 2012.

Ferno’s funeral sales success in Scandinavia

Did you know that Ferno exports as well? One of our latest funeral and mortuary products is proving to be a big hit in Norway and Sweden.
This year we have reported record sales of our Model 11-T Stretcher in the Scandinavian countries.
The Model 11-T has been specifically developed from the successful Model 11 design and features an innovative track system that allows for the removal of the deceased down stairs with much more control and reduces the risk of injury to funeral and mortuary personnel.
Since the Model 11-T was launched we have had some amazing feedback and it’s proving to be a popular solution. We found there was a gap in the market for a stretcher in the funeral and mortuary sector which would provide easier transportation over uneven ground and down stairs.
In the past six months we’ve had record sales in these countries and we expect this to continue as more of those in the industry recognize the usefulness of such an innovative product.”
The Model 11-T Stretcher is sturdy and lightweight with two front wheels and a narrow track-to-ground clearance for easy maneuvering over all surfaces, even with the tracks deployed. It folds in half when not in use for easy carrying and storage and includes two five inch quick release patient restraints, a foot rest and carrying case.
With more than 40 years experience in the medical equipment sector, Ferno’s funeral and mortuary products cover First Call, Refrigeration, Preparation and Rest Room.
As well as stretchers, Ferno’s First Call products include removal trolleys, scoops and transfer boards.
Ferno also offers a range of refrigeration products including cold chambers and refrigerated tables. Preparation equipment ranges from lifting equipment, embalming and autopsy tables and mortuary trolleys. Restroom equipment includes church and showroom trolleys, trestles and biers.

We have some more dates to add to the list of exhibitions and conferences we are attending in October and November.
On October 9-10 a team from Ferno will be at the Bristol Ambulance Open Day organised by Bristol Ambulance EM at 1 Kings Park Avenue where we will be showcasing a range of trolleys, chairs and other equipment including a roller ramp.
Then on October 12-13 we will be at the Co-operative Funeral Service Managers’ Association’s Conference at the Forest Pines Hotel, Broughton, near Brigg, North Lincolnshire. This is a big conference for Ferno and we will be showing off our entire range of funeral and mortuary equipment.
On October 23-24 the Ferno team responsible for our military equipment will be attending the Defence Medical Services Critical Care Conference at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham. You can find out more about our military offering here.
In November we will be at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel to attend the Mid-Trent Critical Care Annual Conference. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn from the lessons that the military has acquired regarding the 'sprints' of major trauma, and the 'marathon' of rehabilitation, and how both are vital to patient focussed care. Delegates will get an opportunity to see our military equipment and our critical care trolleys.
Then, for three days from November 6 to 8 we will be in London to attend the MEDEVAC 2012 Conference which brings together senior military medical officers to explore the challenges surrounding medical evacuation and in-theatre care, such as the standardisation of equipment, the interoperability of medical teams and their equipment and the modernisation of equipment and medical evacuation platforms.
This is great opportunity for us to engage with our partners in the military and other critical care professionals.
As always if you are attending any of these events do come and meet us and we can show you why we are the leading UK manufacturer of emergency medical equipment, military evacuation equipment and funeral and mortuary solutions.

We are launching our Coffin Buggy - a new lightweight body lifting solution – at the British Institute of Funeral Directors Conference in Harrogate nexct month.

Good day at patient safety conference

Ferno at the National Ambulance Service Patient Safety Conference 2012

You may have seen from some of our Tweets from yesterday when we attended the National Ambulance Service Patient Safety Conference 2012 at Aston Villa Football Club, Villa Park. This is a joint partnership between West Midlands Ambulance Service and the College of Paramedics.
The conference was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our products which included the Harrier LT-LBS, Compact 2 Track, Scoop EXL and our new UHI as well as get some insight into new trends in patient safety.
This year there were four main areas of focus at the conference: Cardiac and Stroke - Reducing the Delays to Definative Care; Trauma Management - Reducing Mortality and Morbidity; Keeping Patients Safe at the Beginning and End of Life and Maintaining Improvements in Patient Safety.
To those of you visiting our stand yesterday a big thanks you and we look forward to talking to you again in the future.

Happy Birthday Tracey

Many happy returns to our receptionist Tracey Softley who is celebrating her fiftieth birthday - hope you like the cake Tracey

In training for safety with Ferno

At Ferno we have launched a new training service to ensure that customers get the best use out of our wide range of equipment.
The new service will cover Ferno’s entire range of equipment for key sectors including ambulance; funeral and mortuary; hospital and rescue and evacuation.
The training service ensures that anyone using Ferno’s products will have the right skills set to safely and efficiently use a trolley, wheelchair, rescue chair or, indeed, any of our products.
The service is also available to any organisations, which under law are obliged to have a range of rescue and evacuation products on their premises. As a result we have worked with Google at its European HQ in Dublin, Trinity College and the National Galleries in Scotland.”
We recently delivered a training session to Huddersfield Town Football Club at its John Smiths Stadium after completing an evacuation audit for the club which has several Ferno evacuation products.
A particular area of expertise is our ability to ‘customise’ and ‘tailor’ courses and programmes to suit a wide range of customer and clients’ needs, which is what we did with the National Gallery delivering a high quality and cost effective training programme.
Michael Clarke, Director of the Scottish Galleries. “We found the training programme to be invaluable. It gave us the opportunity to learn about the full potential of Ferno’s equipment and all there uses, meaning that we are likely to use it far more than we would have done.”
The training service complements Ferno’s existing consulting programme and Evacuation Audit which ensures that companies keep their people safe in the event of an emergency evacuation.
A significant number of Ferno customers operating across a whole range of industries and sectors are struggling with new health and safety legislation such as the Equality Act 2010 and the fire safety Regulatory Reform Order 2005.
These two major changes in the law require companies to take responsibility for the evacuation of everyone on their site, whether they are employees, visitors or contractors, and that particular attention needs to be paid to procedures for disabled, injured or unwell persons.
As a result we have developed an Evacuation Audit service which helps companies understand what measures they must put in place to quickly and safely evacuate a building and comply with regulations.
The Ferno Evacuation Audit considers all aspects of an emergency evacuation including the management of disabled people, treating the injured, the effects of smoke, lighting and crowd control.
Buildings which have to comply with the new legislation include offices and shops, factories and warehouses, residential care and educational premises, theatres, cinemas, healthcare and transport premises and places of assembly - large or small.
Ferno’s work with the emergency services means that our staff are experts in all aspects of emergency evacuation planning and can help companies meet all their obligations under existing legislation.
To find out more give us a call on 01224 851 999.

Ferno on the field: Squel Stein at the Paralympics

Eagle-eyed fans of Ferno would have seen one of our stretchers on the field of play again this week at the Paralympics when Brazil's Squel Stein was carried off the field in a Ferno stretcher during a BMX cycling women's semifinal run. Stein fell off her bike after she landed on the grass following a big jump in the first half of the course. The 21-year-old Stein secured her best result in a major competition earlier this year when she reached the world championships final.

New X Lifter for funeral and mortuary sector

Ferno has launched ‘The X Lifter’ - a new lightweight body lifting solution for the funeral and mortuary sector.
The X Lifter has been developed to supply customers who have long demanded a more compact and diverse answer to solve common issues associated with other lifting devices.
The X Lifter makes it possible for anyone to single handedly easily load and unload a coffin rack. It is also super lightweight. It is 5kgs lighter than any similar item and the most compact lifter ever produced at 318mm when closed-down. Folding this small means the product can easily be hidden away underneath an altar when not in use.
And we already have one delighted customer in Colin Rescorla of C.L. Funeral Service, Cornwall who was the first to purchase an X Lifter at the National Association of Funeral Directors Conference in Stratford upon Avon. Keen to put it to work, he took it away the same day.
Colin says: “I wish I had bought one 15 years ago, it’s made things so much easier for us. The X Lifter has made it possible for one person to comfortably handle most jobs. I wish I had bought another at the same time”.
He added: “I’ve used Ferno products for many years, and I’d never buy anything else. As a metal worker, I had been considering building something of a similar design, but couldn’t see the point when the X Lifter does exactly what I need it to do.”
The X Lifter is available with two attachments - a tilting embalming top and a coffin frame. The embalming top comes complete with six body rests while the coffin frame has four rubber rollers that can be manufactured to suit individual needs and requirements.
Customers can opt to have a foot pedal on the X Lifter and the innovative new design makes it easier than ever to operate, with no exposed wires.
Ferno’s Managing Director, Jon Ellis said: “We are really pleased to now be able to supply a product that the market has been demanding for so long. It’s great knowing Ferno have filled that gap. We have already had some fantastic feedback off our customers”.
